Derailment west of Deshler
According to farmer on TO, a coal train derailed at East Hamler, OH (old west end double track) this morning. According to him, the cause has been found and not track related.

Re: Derailment west of Deshler
The train in question was T909; it derailed in the plant at East Hamler, one of the eastbound signals was knocked down. The head end of the train with about twenty cars was pulled down to County Road 8B. Hulcher and Corman were already on the scene removing the derailed cars which mostly stayed atop the right-of-way. I'll have photos posted this afternoon.

As as an aside, nice avatar, DTI 407. That's one of the former BSCX Bethgons I used to see in coke service on the UBH trains from Pennsylania to Indiana

Re: Derailment west of Deshler
Looking at these photographs of the cleanup, it doesn't appear that any kind of specialized equipment for dealing with railroad cars or track is being used. Most of the machinery is just common earth-moving stuff, although there are also a few mechanized "jacks" for lifting cars.
Does this represent the state of the art? I would think that a lot of specialized equipment should have been designed to deal specifically with railroad accidents. Maybe specialized machinery would allow them to open the lines more quickly.

Re: Derailment west of Deshler
So did they really run around the power on Q381 and take it back East & then North?
Here's a couple shots of Q381 sitting at Hoytville:

If you look in the picture here http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=276283 you see a side boom behind the excavator on the track, and one behind railcar on the left. Sidebooms are a pretty specialized machines. Only used in laying of gas and petroleum lines, and in railroad wrecksazimmer wrote:Looking at these photographs of the cleanup, it doesn't appear that any kind of specialized equipment for dealing with railroad cars or track is being used. Re: Derailment west of Deshler
In a derailment such as this, the railroad doesn't care about re-railing the cars. They just want them in the ditch, they want the panel track laid down, tamped, and trains moving again. The extra effort to rerail those cars isn't worth the delay and added costs to the 40 or 50 trains a day that traverse that line. Use a bulldozer to get them off the ROW, and let the claims adjusters haggle with the car owners.
