RRFan Fall Meet 2011 - Fostoria/Deshler Ohio Oct 8-9

Unread post by ~Z~ »

Admin edit: Fall meet has been decided per the vote. We'll head down to Fostoria Ohio early Saturday morning on October 8th 2011. Around nightfall or early evening, we'll make our way west to Deshler Ohio. Most spend the night at Deshler setting up tents in the grassy areas, or sleeping in cars. If neither work, feel free to get a hotel room in Fostoria, Findlay, or Bowling Green. We'll continue on Sunday and stay the day in Deshler, departing around sunset. Feel free to come and go either day, or stay for the entire meet. For those that haven't gone, it's a very informal meet; just hang out, watch trains, chit-chat, and head to the bar at night if you care to.
Message below is for the voting part that is already complete
-----------------------------------

It's almost fall, so let's get the fall meet into action! Going to do a city/date vote all in one, so let's make it happen. Chatted with a number of people, and below are places that seem to work. I'm booked throughout September already, and with just now putting up the vote, need to give people enough advance notice.

You have the option of voting for up to all 6 choices. If you want to make any of the three cities, vote for them all. Make any of the three dates, vote for them too. Only want to make one city and one date, place your vote. Voting open for a week and the winning combo will be stated on Sept 11th. Enabled revoting as well in case you mess up or your plans change.

For those that haven't gone in the past, we usually stay the night and make this a two day meet. Deshler allows camping, while Butler and Durand you'd probably have to sleep in your car or get a motel. Remember to make plans to carpool with others if wanted, and let me know any questions you may have.

Gonna have to vote for the Ohio locations. Durand would be nice, but thats a 5 hour drive from Dayton.

Got to vote for Durand. Great place for a social event, also we have done Fostoria/Deshler several times as a group.

Matt, that is the only problem. I do agree with you. I voted for Durand mainly because it is a good place for a social event and for many people on the board it is closer than fostoria. We have also been to /deshler a lot latley for meets. But honestly, I would not be dissapointed if Fostoria deshler won.

Don't forget about SRI steam excursions in October with NKP 765 on Sat 10/1 and Sat 10/15.

I went to a meet in Durand in June on a Satruday and over a 5-6 hour period saw 5-6 trains. I was surprised we saw that many. I guess most of the trains come through in the evening now unless things have changed again.

I'll say Durand just because it's close for me (yeah, I'm selfish that way :P )
but I'm cool with Butler too. I stopped in Butler the Monday after the June
Marion/Deshler meet and caught 8 trains in 2 hours. 6 NS and 2 CP, all
westbounds. That included a manifest with a local overtaking it running
side-by-side. First 2 dates are good since I've taken vacation from the 10th
to the 14th. I'm planning on spending the week bugging Huron and Eastern
and getting my fall color shots.

Vote "D" All of the above. Fostoria/Deshler is close for me. But slightly worn out (although I would still go). Haven't been to Durand or Butler before (so these are nice). Weekends are pretty much all open. Unless I end up having to work. Anyway, hope to see a lot of you at where ever we go.

I voted Butler (never been there) and for a date later in October so I wouldn't miss the NKP 765 fall color trips.

Cincinnati Railroad Club meeting the first weekend and Marion the second weekend. That narrows it down for me considerably.

Like Jochs said, IIRC, 765 is running excursions October 1st and October 15th. I would prefer the railroadfan meet to not be on the 15th due to the 765 excursion. So I went with the earliest option in October for my vote.

Perhaps a side trip on the way to Fostoria through Jackson...

I voted for Durand only because it is relatively close now that I'm back in Waterford. Can't afford the gas money to make trips to Ohio any more.

Granted there are not a lot of trains passing through Durand during the day. The socialization with my fellow railfans is more important.

Have you guys given any consideration to renting the depot at Waterloo, IN? Its $107 a day to rent and the only caveat is to make sure its cleaned up when you're done with it. I voted for Butler as that's only a 30-40 minute drive from my home :D

If Durand ends up being the final location. I wonder if Hogger might want to set up a op session for members to swing by and check out the layout. Don't think he is terribly far from Durand. If I make the trip up there, I would love to see his layout.

Not a bad idea...

Where would we actually have a "meet" in Butler? I'm not aware of a "good" spot there for a bunch of people to camp out for a day or two?....
