1890 report on Boiler Inspection
Check out this report on boiler inspections by the Hartford Company from 1890. Now I know why there were so many explosions back then.

Fascinating reading. Minding a boiler was serious, if not dangerous, business so it would seem.

Re: 1890 report on Boiler Inspection
This is way many cities require a boiler operator based on the type on boiler you are going to operate - I was one the licensed operator - operating at 2600 psi. My boilers were checked by the State and insurance company inspect on routine, and the company also checked the boilers and piping. The operators checked everything continual. Little leaks can become big leaks in a hurry.
Biggest problem is small companies and private owners who never check any pressure vessel for rust or other damage.

Henry,
What exactly do they do when testing a boiler?

Re: 1890 report on Boiler Inspection
Rick - It depends on the type of boiler, I operated water tube boiler which the a tube will fail before any of the drums. When we test it with safety valves removed, this 1st step to find bad connection of tubes to drums, we do this normally with boiler feed pumps which will reach 150% of boiler pressure. Fix all leakers then put the safety valves back on - each safety was pretested - the water test again, if all goes good - the stat inspector comes and connects his gauge then we fire up the boiler and come to operating pressure, we will have boiler walkdown inspection, then raise the boiler pressure to lift the safety valves (eleven of them) to insure they all work as designed. The testing for state every seven year, insurance about every two - testing at leaser degree. If a safety valve has been repair it - it be retest will on boiler pressure.
Fire tube boiler every years - For new iron (old - must be replaced) Railroad rules 22 years basically end of life for boiler.

Re: 1890 report on Boiler Inspection
Thank you for the information. Did you have to get in the boilers to clean them? Some of my customers have to do that every year (?) and said it's a filthy job.

Re: 1890 report on Boiler Inspection
Fire tube is continual project with wash out;
Water tube the lower drums (called mud drums) have to be inspected and cleaned as necessary about once a year, steam have remove all steam separator equipment from inside for inspection only done on major boiler inspections about 3 years period. Todays water quantity, eliminates deposits with the boiler, what there is must be chemical removed - determine by tests.

For over 150 years the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Co. published a quarterly journal on boiler explosions called "the Locomotive". Here is some information about the company. You can find many of their journals on http://www.archive.org
