Re: Specific location of ITM Logansport
According to them, they're moving to the Logansport & Eel River Railroad property. This is what's left of the Eel River line, and runs from the west side of town into downtown. The outside connection runs down the east side of Cole Hardwood plant to the TP&W connection. IIRC, this would have been the north side of the interlocking at Van. The TP&W line to Clymers connects to the main east-west line at Van. The L&ER still had a signaled grade crossing on Market Street the last time I was in Logansport, although those signals had been bagged for quite some time.
According to an L&ER page on Facebook, the sale hasn't happened yet and may not be as smooth a transaction as it sounded like it would be at first. Unfortunately, even if it does go through, G&W (owns the only connection the L&ER has to the outside world) isn't steam or passenger friendly. Right aroubd the time G&W took over the RailAmerica operations a planned 765 trip over the line from Kokomo to Logansport and the line from Van south to Bringhurst was cancelled because TP&W wouldn't allow them to connect across TP&W-controlled trackage. The anti-passenger/anti-steam attitude hasn't changed from what I've heard, so ITM would have a 2ish mile spur that hasn't been used in many years and is landlocked on both ends, if the sale goes through.

Google aerial shows the connection isn't intact.

The west end of the trail is about as far east as the railroad goes. The trail itself is nice enough, but didn't connect to anything on the east end when we biked it several years ago.justalurker66 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 07, 2021 5:03 pmHere?

If you're interested in the history of the location ITM is planning to go, visit the Indiana Railroads message board and do a search for the Eel River, or Logansport & Eel River. There's some really interesting history behind that location and why what's there today is still there today.
