Arkansas & Missouri Railroad Overview
The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad is an independent, Class III railroad serving a 150 mile corridor from Fort Smith, AR to Monett, MO. The line was built between 1880 and 1882 by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway ("Frisco"), a predecessor of Burlington Northern Railroad, and was leased by the latter to the Arkansas and Missouri in 1986. The company completed purchase of the property in early 2001. The lease of Union Pacific trackage in an area known as "the Bottoms" occurred in 2000. In 2010, A&M purchased "the Bottoms" from UP. The railroad serves numerous warehouse and transload facilities, as well as port facilities on the Arkansas River in Fort Smith and Van Buren.
The road is known for its fleet of 4-axle Alcos and MLWs along with its SD70ACes.
In addition to freight service, the A&M also operates passenger excursions year-round.
The railroad interchanges with CPKC at Fort Smith, AR, with Union Pacific Railroad at Van Buren, AR, and with BNSF Railway at Monett, MO
