Hamilton Northwestern Railroad Overview

The Hamilton Northwestern Railroad was formed in 2022 to operate part of the Hamilton Industrial Branch between Hamilton and Holland. The railroad is owned and operated by Hamilton Hartford Group, which also owns and operates the West Michigan Railroad in Hartford. The railroad owns the line between Hamilton and the I-196 overpass in Holland. From there the railroad operates over CSX using trackage rights to the interchange in Waverly Yard in Holland.

Part of this branch had been abandoned by CSX in 2003 and was saved after Hamilton Farm Bureau purchased the line between I-196 and Hamilton the same year. CSX continued providing rail service on the line from 2003 to 2022, while the line changed ownership three times in that time period (Hamilton Farm Bureau from 2003 to 2013, CHS from 2013 to 2020, and Endeavor Ag & Energy from 2020 to 2022).

Endeavor Ag & Energy is currently the only customer, but the railroad would like to increase business and develop a transload facility along the line.

HNW interchanges with CSX in Holland, which is inactive.
