U.S. Sugar Corporation Overview
U.S. Sugar Corporation is a privately owned agricultural business based in Clewiston, Florida. The company farms over 230,000 acres of land in the counties of Hendry, Glades, Martin, and Palm Beach. It is the largest producer of sugarcane in the United States by volume, producing over 700,000 tonnes per year. To move its crop, USSC employs two indistinguishable, yet separate railroads, the U.S. Sugar Railroad and the South Central Florida Express. The South Central Florida Express is a common carrier operator which controls the majority of USSC's trackage. At 171 miles in length, it services USSC and various other customers and interchanges with CSX at Sebring and the Florida East Coast at Cana. The railroad began operation in 1994 on tracks previously owned and operated by CSX and in 1998, expanded operations on to Florida East Coast Railway's K-Line Subdivision. In addition, U.S. Sugar has its own private tracks known as the U.S. Sugar Railroad, which consists of multiple branch lines connected to SCFE tracks. Since it is classified as a private industrial operation it is outside the scope of FRA control. It exclusively hauls sugar cane on its own private trackage throughout USSC's vast acreage. The two roads share locomotives and yard space, making it hard to tell them apart.
