AWESOME!
Agreed Awesome nd I see Ann Arbor Railroad Box cars
Can't say I've ever seen Geeps in charge of intermodal trains before, besides ATSF & their GP60Ms!
MQT you need to start reading some old railroad books. EVERYTHING intermodal/TOFC pre 1990's was hauled by 4 axles.
I'm not that much older than him and I still remember seeing four-axles on high-priority trains. Hell, back in the early 90's CSX hot-shots got almost nothing besides B30-7's/B36-7's and GP40-2's.
Dont froget the Detroit Atlanta Roadrailers that CSX did with F units FP7s and F7s
I've seen SD9's pulling pig trains before in the UP on the ELS in Reserve Mining Paint...
The ones that stick in my mind are the Lazer trains with a trio of GTW geeps
CN would send GP40-2W's on 148 the odd time
Yeah, Chessie/early CSX intermodals typically had a trio of B36-7s and sometimes GP40-2s. That's what B36-7s and GP50/GP60s were designed for; high speed, low tonnage trains. Back in the day though, anything went. It was more uncommon to find big power on intermodals. SD40-2s/SD50s which were the "big motors" in the 80s were largely used in coal and bulk service...
Conrail's MAIL and other high priority trains ran almost exlusively with B40-8/B36-7/GP40-2 combos until the early 90's.
Another thing you have to consider is that when this power came out, it WAS the "big" power. The majority of the rosters consisted of GP7/GP9s, Fs, U25Bs, etc...
