Carpet or not to Carpet

Unread post by Dan M »

It has been a while since I have posted on the board... many thing going on. Still beta testing TS12. Still route making the Mt Clemens Sub for TS12. Still building a model railroad in the basement. I just finished the HVAC installation of a geothermal system and plan on construction again the the train room by January. My thought is whether or not to carpet the floor with a durable berber carpet... any opinions on this. The floor is painted and will probable need it again after walls, drywall and ceiling tiles are put in. Who here has carpet in the train room and is it good or bad? My basement is dry as long as the sump pump is running. I do have a dehumidifier for the summer, but now with the whole house being hooked up to the HVAC, I am not sure if I will need it.

The PM Almont Sub site of mine is here.... https://sites.google.com/site/pmalmontsub/
If only... Image

Anyway, info of carpet opinions is welcome.

My train room floor is carpeted. It's a pain to find things in when you drop small parts but I much prefer it to other train rooms I've been in that have hard wood or tile (or concrete) floors as it's far more comfortable to walk and stand on.

My train room is carpet as well. Having the comfort of a carpet floor is one of the major reasons why I built my layout in the 2nd floor of my house insted of the basement. Hard floors in the basement can be really uncomfortable, especially in the winter.

I agree with the pro-carpet guys. Much more comfortable.

How big is your layout going to be?
If its around the wall and with a couple of peninsulas I would build it on concrete floor one reason its easier to level the bench work 2nd. easier to keep clean and if you want something soft to stand on try installing this Imagethis down on the aisle ways

As PSG Mentioned the pads are nice and easy to remove if you ever had to, but I would be a pro-carpet guy otherwise especially in the case of a multi deck layout where the lower deck is feet from the floor.

Thanks for the replies all. I was thinking of the interlocking rubber flooring too. I have been leaning to that or long runners of carpet down the isles and nothing under the layout. When the auto show comes back to town, there are deals on the carpeting if you can get in there for the remnants from the show when it is all taken down. That may be a way to go too.

This what I intend on using. I have purchased about 24 sqft so far from Lowes. I can lay them down only where I need them and the fascia curtains will hide the edges. A little double sided tape on a few here and there and they dont seem to slide much. Im using the dark grey so it wont detour from the layout "atmosphere". I have carpet in the room that houses the end of the line, it nice working in there. Bare concrete kills my ankles and feet and I think it strains my legs after a long while, and I am only 33.

The rubber floor matting is the best. Easy to keep clean. I dropped a small container of soupy plaster on the floor and just pulled up the piece of rubber, took it outside and hosed it off. Also had a dehumidifier malfunction and soak about 20' of floor. Just pulled up the tiles and aired them out until they were dry.

I waited until benchwork was done to install it.

Nice and easy on the feet and legs when you are in the basement for hours. Stop by and check it out sometime.

I'm with Larry, having stood in his basement running trains for hours its really nice. Unlike another really really nice layout I've been to that is carpeted, but its just carpet on the concrete with no padding

I think it's gonna be... paint floor, rubber isles, and then call it good. Now to get the ball rolling here with the new year coming. The layout room is about 22' 4" x 19'. https://sites.google.com/site/pmalmonts ... ayout-plan
