L533S leaving Mount Clemens for Detroit at 17:00 with a huge train. Many boxcars, loaded and empty lumber cars, several tanks and loaded scrap metal gons. Smells an awful lot like 383 overflow traffic. Lone SD60 was struggling a bit to get them up the grade south of the Clinton River valley.

17:05 - EB 2-unit A450 by the 205 cam with CN pair. These old SD75is are so dirty it's hard to make out the unit numbers on the cam! 39 or 40 coil loads tonight.

Do you know what customer the steel coils are for? I've been noticing the large cuts of coil cars lately, both north and southbound, and have been curious about them since I'm out of the loop.

I think one of the destinations is CR's North Yard. They might be handling some from the steel mill on Zug Island, too.

Train 515 has been picking up a lot of coiled steel cars at the CR interchange track at East Yard/North Yard for a number of years now. These are all covered cars so I don't know which way the loads are coming or going.

It has been reported earlier that the SB steel cars that are uncovered and coming from Chicago area on through freights are going to Great Lake Steel in Ecorse. Don't know what they are doing with them there. They used to flat roll hot ingots of steel there at one time at the long building next to the park and Detroit Edison's Riverview Power plant, coil them and load them onto freight cars there years ago. Sometimes these open loaded steel cars head back to Chicago on trains and someone reported those are rejected coils from Ecorse.

Blast furnaces and hot strip line are closed at Great Lakes Works in Ecorse. The pickle line, temper mill, and galvanizing line are still in operation. Rolled steel is needed for these operations. Since the hot line was shut down, coils haved moved from Gary Works to Great Lakes Works via NS. More and more of this traffic is moving via CN.

EB M394 - Only 394/397 and 492/491 have blocks of BNSF covered hoppers, and 394/7 usually have larger ones. it's bentonite clay. 394/397 also have the blocks of the black gons with white lids and carloads of metal ingots.

Thanks guys for the info! Good to see more business rolling on the Holly Sub, even if it's only tacked onto existing trains.
