Grand Trunk Western Railroad All-Time Diesel Locomotive Roster

This roster reflects the GTW's fleet of diesel locomotives from the 1940s until the integration into CN North America circa 1999, broken down as best as we can by individual orders. Engines will appear on the list with the number they wore the longest. Renumbers are denoted in the notes. It is a continued work in progress!

EMD GP9R Roster Details

In the late 1980s, the GTW decided to rebuild a portion of its aging GP9 fleet, which even then was the backbone of the Trunk's fleet, into modern GP9-equivalents. Original GTW units, along with some that had been reassigned from the Central Vermont and Grand Trunk Railways, were selected to be rebuilt. It is not known if there was any criteria for selecting which units would be rebuilt and which would not, or if they were simply chosen at random. The work would be done at the GTW's own shop in Battle Creek, MI, which would prove to be the last major project the shop would undertake before closing in the mid 1990s. The original cabs and noses were cut off the selected units, and new cabs and noses fabricated by VMV in Paducah, KY were installed. The units also had a complete rewire along with an engine overhaul, receiving EMD 645 power assemblies for their existing 567 engines. In addition, any incoming GP9s that had older 24 schedule air brakes were upgraded to the more modern 26 schedule. The first few units were completed in 1989, and GTW continued rebuilding them at a steady pace until 36 were completed by the end of 1993. The GTW wanted to get another 20 years out of them, and some of the fleet still runs for CN as of 2021, a testament to the work done by Battle Creek!

Locomotive Model Notes & Info

  • ALCO RS-1
    • 2 units purchased new in 1957.
    • Purchased in anticipation of GTW becoming the primary switching railroad at Dearborn Station in Chicago, but that never came to pass.
      • As a result of this, the 2 RS-1s were orphaned from the start. They could only operate MU'd with each other, which further hampered their flexibility.
      • Eventually they found homes on long distance locals on the "Air Line", Greenville and Grand Rapids Subdivisions
      • They ended their careers in transfer service in the Detroit area and finally as yard switchers in Battle Creek.
    • 1951 was repainted into Burdakin Blue in the 1970s, 1950 remained black until retirement.
    • Final 2 RS-1s built by ALCO.
  • EMD F3A
    • 22 units purchased new in 1948
    • The first 10 were built with traditional F3-style "Chicken Wire" radiators
    • Final 12 were built with new F7-style stainless steel radiators. These units are sometimes unofficially referred to as "F5s".
    • These were the only "cab" units owned by GTW and were strictly freight engines, as they lacked passenger gearing and steam generators.
    • GTW considered but never ordered any F3B units.
    • 21 units were traded into EMD in 1972 as credit for the new GP38ACs.
  • EMD GP7
    • 10 units 6041-6050 inherited from Detroit & Toledo Shoreline. 6046 and 6049 had their air brake equipment upgraded to 26L and received GTW blue.
    • An 11th unit, DT&I 973, was acquired when the GTW purchased the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton. It was never renumbered and it is unknown if it ever saw any use under GTW ownership.
    • 6046 and 6049 lasted until the early 1990s, then were sold off.
  • EMD GP9
  • EMD GP9R
    • Rebuilt from various former GTW, GT and CV GP9s.
    • First dozen or so units used aluminum wiring, which proved to be problematic.
    • Some units later transferred to the Central Vermont.
  • EMD GP18
    • 8 units purchased in Feb 1960 helped end the last steam-powered freight operations on GTW.
    • 3 additional units purchased in March 1960, steam boiler equipped and geared for passenger service.
  • EMD GP35
    • 8 units acquired from the DT&I purchase in 1980.

    • Much less reliable than most of GTW's units, they were retired in the mid 1980s.
  • EMD GP38
    • GTW's only true GP38s were 5 units acquired via the DT&I.
    • GTW 6200 (ex DT&I 200) was the very first GP38 built by EMD.
    • Only locomotives on GTW to have nose-mounted headlights. Some were later relocated to the cab.
  • EMD GP38AC
    • 12 units purchased new in 1971
    • Units were delivered from EMD with an elongated "GT" logo, compared to the "GT" logo on units GTW painted in-house.
    • Some were later transferred to the Central Vermont, but returned after CN sold the CV.
    • 14 more units acquired via the DT&I.
    • Ex-DT&I units had nose-mounted "Gong" bells, which were later removed by GTW.
  • EMD GP38-2
    • 20 units purchased new in 1978
    • 5 more purchased new in 1980
    • Like the GP38ACs, delivered with an elongated "GT" logo

  • EMD SD40
    • 12 units purchased new in 1969, followed by 18 more in 1970.
