Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis Overview
Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis is a Class 3 switching and terminal railroad operating in the St. Louis metro area. It owns both rail bridges across the Mississippi River in St. Louis, the MacArthur Bridge and Merchants Bridge, and requires a fee for other railroads to cross them. TRRA is jointly owned by 5 of the 6 Class 1 railroads operating in St. Louis (UP, CSX, BNSF, NS, and CN). All own one-seventh of the railroad, except UP, who owns three-sevenths. CPKC is the only Class 1 in the St. Louis area that is not included in TRRA ownership.
TRRA also owns the largest classification and hump yard in the St. Louis Metro, Venice (or Madison) Yard. All Class 1s in the St. Louis area interchange with TRRA here. The switching yard consists of 80 inbound, outbound, and holding tracks with a capacity of 2,200 cars.
The Association was originally created in 1889 out of an agreement made by Jay Gould, between predecessor entities of the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis and six proprietary railroads. These railroad were:
- Missouri Pacific
- St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern, later part of MP
- Wabash Railroad, later part of Norfolk & Western
- Ohio & Mississippi Railroad, later part of B&O
- Louisville & Nashville
- Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, later part of the New York Central Railroad
Today, TRRA interchanges with the following:
- CSX at Madison, IL and Rose Lake, IL
- UP at Madison, IL and Cahokia, IL
- NS at Madison, IL and Luther Yard - North St. Louis, MO
- BNSF at Madison, IL, Lindenwood Yard - St. Louis, MO, and North St. Louis, MO
- CPKC at Madison, IL
- CN at Madison, IL
- PHRR in Granite City, IL
